Noel, I would say that another Intel advantage is its relationship with tier-1 vendors and MNC OEMs. I don't think that Intel gets along so well with all of their partners, simply due to the promise of a stable supply line. The question that AMD investors ought to ask themselves is: if AMD were to have much more capacity, would they be able to convince their customers to buy from them rather than from Intel? If not, what would they do with all the extra capacity if the market for them becomes demand constrained, rather than capacity constrained?

I am glad that Jerry is content killing off Intel's last advantage with a fab coming online in 2005. First, Motorola, now UMC. How many semiconductor operations does he want to destroy?

It also sounds like they're projecting an unusually long construction time. Granted, intel's F22 currently holds the industry record for a "Greenfield" Startup (from the dirt) at 18 months, and that is also unusual, but 3 years to build a fab and get started?? Of course, might not be as easy overseas as in Arizona....

Noel,

<First, Motorola, now UMC. How many semiconductor operations does he want to destroy?>

You bring up an interesting point. I recall speculation on the other thread of partnering in Germany for the 300mm fab. I guess the Germans have had enough of Jerry "we're good at using other people's money" Sanders.<g>
