Monica,

Maybe the costs will be a bit smaller, but it seems that what AMD is really after is the R & D - an admission that AMD is about to become totally dependent upon a third party for their technology development.
Rather a come down for a once-proud company - wouldn't you say?

What is your source of this information?

Joe

Monica, but it seems that what AMD is really after is the R & D

On the contrary, one of the analysts seemed convinced that a major reason UMC wanted the deal was because AMD's 0.13 SOI process is superior to IBM's.

They also said that the basis for the process technology development for 0.09u and 0.06u would be the AMD 0.13 process, NOT UMC's.

Intel was over a year behind AMD to copper, Intel was over a year behind AMD to DDR, Intel looks close to two years behind AMD to SOI.

Intel was 3 years behind Infineon to 300mm wafers.

Intel has always been known as the company with OK designs and leading edge production. Now they've become the company with OK designs and trailing edge production technology.
