People defend the decision to drop the bomb precisely because it is too horrifying if it were not done in exigent circumstances. I do not think that those who deplore the decision are the only ones sensitive to the grimness of the event. In fact, it is difficult to kill other people. It is estimated that troops in World War Two shot at the enemy about a quarter of the time. The rest of the time, they aimed askew. In police work, there is typically psychological trauma even when the shoot was good, if it results in death or severe injury. No one wants to contemplate blowing up families going about their quotidian tasks, and no one in his right mind would care to be responsible for it........
