McNealy has been badmouthing other companies and their management for years. And SUNW loyalists have cheered him on every time he engages in these ill-mannered tirades. What goes around comes around.

I think he was at LinuxWorld when he said it. He probably thought it would play well to that crowd.

JMHO.

I can't figure out what motivated Ellison's extremely hostile comment about Linux and Sun.

Ellison has been saying since last summer that his highest priorities were to get his database and clustering software running on Intel and Linux. Judging by the results of Oracle converting their own in-house corporate systems to those environments, he meant what he said.

QwikSand,

Larry E, aka god,er.. i guess that is GOD, is doing battle with PSFT and if you notice SUNW and PSFT having been setting a number of transaction benchmarks in recent months. In addition, there was to be a major partnership announcement last week from PSFT that was cancelled at the last minute with no explanation. The rumor was that the partner was HWP but there is chance the partner was SUNW. It could be the that PSFT is getting under Mr. E's skin. My wife says that there is no comparison between PSFT Financials and ORCL's. She is involved in an PSFT Financials implementation right now. FWIW

I can't figure out what motivated Ellison's extremely hostile comment about Linux and Sun.

Orcl and Sunw now have some areas where they compete. It's ORCL's worst nightmare to have Sunw bundling applications with their OS. Here is a recent reference (Jan 31, 2002):

Asked earlier if Sun and Oracle are now competitors, because Sun sells an application server that competes with Oracle's, Ellison delivered a friendly potshot.

"I have this conversation with Scott a lot," he said, referring to Sun Chairman and CEO Scott McNealy. "He always wonders if I'm mad at him for going into competitive markets, and the answer is no, because I don't think they stand a chance. Bless their heart, it's not what they do well. I think it's going to be really hard for an open standards company like that to get deep into the software business."
