It seems to me that behaving humanely toward the Palestinians should be done for its own sake, not out of any expectation of results.

I noticed that you listed stopping the settlements as an example of humane behavior toward the Palestinians. I saw in the Mitchell Report that they consider the settlements to be illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention. But are they inhumane? If they are inhumane, what is it that makes them so?

The only thing that could make the settlements inhumane is the conflict itself. If the day ever came that the Palestinians and Israelis could live together in peace, then the mere fact that Israelis were taking up residence among Palestinians would cease to be a problem for anyone.

I'm not saying that I expect this to happen - it's just an observation. I'm also not saying that it makes Israeli settlement policy right, either.

"The U.S. could solve the matter in a heartbeat, by threatening to withhold funds from Israel. But, that will not happen in our lifetime."

What funds are the U.S. providing to Israel? Aren't they buying the weapons they get from us?

In any case, I think you're right that the U.S. won't withdraw support for Israel, because the American people have the perception that this would lead to another Holocaust. So far, the blowing up of bar mitzvahs has not convinced them otherwise.
