You need to read more carefully. Five years notice was not required. The agreement was for a minimum of five years with one year notice being given after the five years was up. Grove could have given a one year notice in 87 and been rid of AMD in 88. They might have even gotten by with giving AMD one year notice in 86 and being rid of them in 87.
