I think that this statement is just a bit too superficial. I would point out that the hundreds of billions that were spent on the military during the Cold War catalyzed the fall of the largest oppressive totalitarian regime ever. As a result, hundreds of millions live in democratic nations as opposed to under an "iron fist" and true global commerce was able to develop in the first place.

With regard to aid to poor countries. Cutting and pasting comments by the head of the UN, a body which we support so disproportionately, does not mean a darn thing to me in terms of how generous Americans actually are.
