Ah, excuse me for a second.

I'm pretty sure that the NeXT box used graphics based on PostScript. I'm also pretty sure OS X graphics is based on the PDF format - it's one reason it's so easy to print to a PDF from any program, if that program is running in OS X.

this is very much like X-terms ... the video processing is handled by the display terminal and the server (i.e your computer) just sends the postscript info ...

Ehr... That is what X-terms were supposed to be in the white paper Athena design spec. In reality they ended up being two powerful CPUs at each side (terminal and server, or server and client, resp, using X nomenclature) exchanging bitmaps.

X-windows is one of the most brain-dead products ever, which also goes to show that inferior products often survive, monopoly or not.
