Alan,

This whole manic depressive back and forth about whether XYZ is a good investment, with the underlying message that the poster is a genius and the postee is a moron has gotten old.

My take: That sort of thing has been on the Internet on a regular basis since I began viewing personal finance forums in 1994. I've not visited a site that hasn't had, on a regular basis, posters with that mentality. For me, it took about 30 minutes for it to become old.

However, I don't feel that has been the predominant flavor of certain specific boards including this one. As an example, just today there was no doubt in my mind that within one hour of posting a question, I would get at least one helpful response. The first one came within ten minutes and a second one came a couple hours later.

There is a different spirit on SI than when I first began lurking here

I'm disappointed, though not surprised, that there are a lot of people who are more interested in participating in a helpful way when they are making money hand over fist than when they are losing it hand over fist. That's why I especially appreciate the people such as Pirah who contribute regularly to our forum in a helpful, courteous style regardless of the market direction at the time.

I wrote an opinion a few months ago that the sense of community doesn't exist in this folder nearly so much as it used to. Your and my frustration about that seems to be validated. But we wouldn't want to forget that it's still here, though to a lesser degree, thanks to the die-hards who always want to contribute.

My opinion.
