Jozef Re...As an alternative amd might want to shift over to lower end of the market and keep the unit market share as is.

I don't know if something like this could be called strategy, it's more like an unfortunate outcome.<<<<<<<<<<

Why would that happen, when AMD is likely to regain the performance lead this quarter. While AMD may only have 30% of the line converted to 130 nm now, that 30% when you consider that mobile is app. 10% of sales, and MP might at most be another 2% still don't add up to the 30%. All AMD needs to be 130 nm is the top 2 grades, which also would sell approximately 10%. So, I don't think AMD will have a problem launching the 130 nm this q.

I think it is. AMD should just drop Duron when Austin produced chips are no longer competitive, and just keep selling lower speed grades of Athlon for lower prices, effectively addressing the market Duron is serving now<<<<<<<<<<<

Frankly, I think that would be a disaster. The Durons might have 40% of the market at most and cost less. XP sold well last q. against the P4. Both went up 1 speed grade. AMD is likely to do more speed grade improvements this summer with 130 nm and SOI coming on line. Now is not the time to blink.

I think this is the basic strategy. As Clawhammer begins to ship in volume, AMD will reposition Athlon XP versus P4 Celeron, thus neatly sidestepping the issue of QuantiSpeed rating. A new QuantiSpeed metric, versus Northwood, will then be established for Clawhammer. Let's face is, Athlon XP will lose a great deal of ground versus P4 once manufacturing is outsourced to UMC.

>Mainly because having low end and even lower end doesn't sound like a ticket to success.<

Hmm, this was the strategy with Athlon/Duron/K6 and will be the strategy again with Clawhammer / Value Segment Hammer / Athlon.

>Things should be back to normal when AMD can supply volume quantity of .13u desktop chips, but in the meantime (Q1 and Q2), I see trouble on the horizon.<

Oops, I thought you were talking about long range strategy. Of course AMD is going to have it rough the next couple of quarters, or at least this quarter. The only 0.13-micron product that will ship this quarter will be mobile Athlon and mobile Duron. I would not be at all surprised to see AMD introduce a 1733 MHz Palomino Athlon XP 2100+ this quarter however. Q2 may or may not be good for AMD, depending upon how well the transition to 130nm for the desktop progresses.

Joe, re:<AMD should just drop Duron>

Well I think most of the Durons being sold now are 1 to 1.3 GHz, and I don't think Fab 25 can even make them. I agree that whatever Mhz Fab25 can make, they should sell as Athlons rather than Durons.

Things should be back to normal when AMD can supply volume quantity of .13u desktop chips, but in the meantime (Q1 and Q2), I see trouble on the horizon.

I think Q1 will be a stalement for market share. AMD will continue to lose perhaps 1% in desktop share, but make up for it in laptop share. (Advertising of AMD machines at Best Buy, Ciruit City has improved slightly since January, but momentum is in Intel's favor.)

For a healthy Q2, AMD needs to get XP2200+ and XP2400+(0.13) out before Intel gets above 2400 MHz. That would stop the market share loss in desktops.
