Sheik, and the paki police - nincompoops or accidental collaborators
Sheik, the suspected kidnapper gets advance warning.
The suspected kidnapper received advance warning from the paki police: "We have your relatives under custody. We will exchange your relatives for Pearl." Is this stupid or what? Is this a friendly warning from his neighborhood cop on the beat? Nincompoops or collaborators. Possibly the latter? Who knows? The baby-face evil genius did not drop into the police station like a good citizen. He took to his heels.

It's amazing that the US isn't "turning the screws" in the kidnapping.

I believe the US is, mostly privately, but there are some public indications too. For example, Powell took a stronger line than usual against Pakistani terrorism in his Senate testimony. Though I can't find a direct quote, according to this report news.independent.co.uk , U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Ken Dam, who was on a visit to the region, even hinted that the economic aid Pakistan is expecting from the US could hinge on the succesful conclusion of the case.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani Government has shot itself in the foot by first claiming that Gilani was an Indian agent and then when it became clear that Gilani was not involved in the kidnapping, alleging that Omar Sheikh is an Indian agent, as if India collobarated with Taliban to stage the 1999 hijack that resulted in Sheikh's release along with three other terrorists, including the head of the Jaish-e-Mohammed.
