You're not being very flattering of the conservative base. You make it sound like you have to be paid to get out and support a candidate.

Just one point though that should cheer you up if the legislation passes re: your point of...

For another, there is obviously no way to prevent groups like the Sierra Club from making issue oriented ads that may affect an election, but there are fewer such advocacy groups on the Right.

I'll bet that many conservative advocacy groups will emerge if that's how you get ads out. I wouldn't worry about that. They'll be advocacy groups created just for the election. But that's what soft money was supposed to be for in the beginning. Issues advertising and not direct contributions.

Since Democrats are the comparatively activist party,
This sounds like the "Media is liberally biased" argument, in other words a complete fabrication. It seems the conservatives are the ones who endless flood the congress with letters and petitions. They may avoid voter registration drives in the shopping malls, but that's only because their base is in the country clubs.

Neocon
, there is a huge pool of young people working or volunteering for these advocacy organizations, who are more than willing to lend themselves to campaigning without pay, especially in get- out- the- vote efforts. That sort of thing......

So, soft money is needed to crush the idealism out of our children. I agree, normal citizens should not take their responsibilities so seriously. Once they've made a few million then they can become full citizens able to help purchase the election of the correct politicians. How dare those kids get involved in the election process or the direction of our nation! Next thing you know, ordinary people will start taking an interest and pay more attention to the actions of their elected representivies and demand representation. How un-American?
