tejek,

re: I think what's happening is that they're talking to both and by saying "Intel architecture", they're telling Intel if you don't come thru with the price we want, we're going to AMD.

Actually, Sun already sells Intel and AMD based systems ever since they bought Cobalt. Before that they sold K6-2 cpu's in the SBUS SunPC card, and before that the major league flop Sun i386 system. That flop of a system is what left such a bad taste in their mouths for x86 and caused a rift with Intel years ago.

Key Specifications:
1U fully integrated caching server appliance with up to 40 GB of hard drive space, expandable to 512 MB of SDRAM, 450 MHz AMD K6-2 CPU and dual 10/100BaseT NICs.

1U fully integrated Web server appliance and offers up to four Ultra ATA-66 removable hard drives, up to 2 GB of 133 MHz SDRAM, Dual 10/100 Ethernet, 850 MHz / 1 GHz Pentium® III processor.

I'm not so sure Sun is dictating anything to Intel or AMD. Once again AMD's lack of a good multi-cpu chipset may deny them the sales so many people hope for.

tejek,

Here's a telling search over at the sun site:

Search for the word Intel on www.sun.com, I got 9,182 hits.

s2.sun.com

Searching for AMD, netted 67.
