People left IBM for another reason
IBM squashed a lot of clone makers. They just threatened to sue Eagle Computer. This essentially put Eagle out of business. I know because I was holding 30,000sh of Eagle at the time.

By then, IBMs reputation as the PC company was gone for ever.

Shortly thereafter Intel joined with Compaq to design the EISA bus and IBM no longer owned the bus architecture. PCI followed a couple of years later. Intel was relying on unreliable chipset support which was limiting their CPU sales so they decided to roll their own and thus took over the chipset business. Meanwhile IBM had licensed the i386 and i486 for internal production but in partnership with MOTO and APPLE had designed the PPC so IBM declined to license Pentium.
