Don't get me wrong...I respect Joan Baez and I can't think of a single one of her songs that would cause me to switch stations if it came on the radio. It's just that on some songs, her delivery strikes me as a bit off. For example, while her voice is far superior to Steve Goodman's, I prefer his own rendition of "Yellow Coat" to hers. To me, he conveys the emotion behind the song better. Same with The Band and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". That being said, I would definitely include at least one Joan Baez CD among my 100 Essential Recordings To Own.

A Joan Baez performance anecdote: I saw her at a show for which Steve Goodman opened. At the end of her set, she invited Steve onstage to share the encore. He did, along with John Prine who was also in town and apparently came to the show. It became real obvious that they had been, as Steve would have put it, "sharing more than a few frostys" during her performance. It was a memorable rendition of "Amazing Grace".
