'30 second soundbites', yes. That is, of course, ever foremost in the politicians' minds. That, and insulating themselves from the corrosive political effects caused by they themselves having received contributions from the 'skunk of the month', Enron.

Behind the scenes though, it looks likely that serious accounting reform will follow, and new 'best practices' for securities analysts are also well into being birthed. Also, the campaign finance bill (which was most assuredly dead before this news cycle broke), now looks to be slightly better then even odds to pass.

As to any possibility of serious political damage befalling the President... that looks staunched for now, unless a Special Prosecutor is ever appointed... and then the ground would be shifted.
