Hi Bob,

Yes, I took you off my ignore list. You will be happy to learn that you EARNED it. There were enough interesting responses to your posts that I felt left out.

I placed you on the list, initially, because I got tired of reading "teheheheheheheheheheheheheh." You seem to have omitted these in recent posts.

I don't discuss politics on SI threads, anymore, so I will not respond to your defense of Bush.

I will say there is logical value to reductio ad absurdum type arguments and in this context the Nero reference is not meant to be a total character assassination.

Robert, Cary: OT, final comments

FWIW, I am a card carrying Republican, and small businessman.

Success is relative, but I will say we (the company, my family and I) do well here in Silicon Valley.

GW: you have to admit he is not exactly a poster child for having done anything on his own. Unlike GW, I am proud to say I am a self made man. I worked my way up from high school flunkout through a world class university working full time to pay my room and tuition. Got all my jobs based on qualifications not connections.

I am also honest to a fault, and have been that way all my life. And that is the basis of my rant, which seems to have been missed. BTW, that is what Republicans used to stand for above all else: remember Abe (the tall dude with the crazy wife)? Now it's no-abortion, no-welfare, no-taxes. The Dems are just the opposite. Honesty and morality are forgotten in both parties.

To re-emphasize: The rich guy who got (and continues to get) his by cheating the edges of the law is (IMHO) worse than a drug dealer or bank robber who outright broke it. He should know better, and has no moral excuse like having to feed him/herself.

But to expect the average politician to do anything about whitecollar crime would be to ask them to expose themselves to the kind of tough law they thought they had carefully segregated / delegated to the poor.

They made and keep white collar crime easy. They made and keep Lompoc California a nice cushy "jail" with Tennis courts, an exercise area, and nice lawns. No big tough "Daddies" down there to make you the object of their nightly affection.

Why?

Because they all realize they might (likely?) end up there someday.

Now that is reality, but is it fair?

And what does history have to say about the long term consequences of that kind of situation?

Could you imagine a SWAT team entering the Enron building at 4AM, breaking down doors and generally trashing the place, dragging Skilling and Lay down the stairs by their hair, strip searching them on the sidewalk, etc?

How about having all their assets seized and put up for auction, proceeds to be kept by the local sheriff?

It ain't gonna happen to anyone at Enron or Global Crossing or any of countless other similar situations.

Better to shoot dead that sonagun po-axx kid that just robbed the local 7-11 at knife point: satisfies the publics need for justice.

Bread and circuses.

Got to admit, as I get older I do not like to look into mirrors anymore. But once in awhile I have to, to check for signs of disease.

Maybe it's a good thing memory goes too.

Look, this is supposed to be fun, right?
