I've heard his stories and read documentations of it in publication by independent sources. They eventually fled to a Ramallah, and eventually emigrated to the US. Someday I'll go into more detail, but I know for a fact this entire town (and several others) had no choice but to get up and leave or face imminent death at the hands of the advancing troops. Many died anyway. Interestingly, many Christians were spared by the troops. It's a lousy situation, and not too many will be happy with any solution. Making Jerusulem an international city like the Vatican, but with 3-religions, could help, and building infrastructure and industry in the occupied territories (not settlements) will also help. The settlements have to go, an agency that is not corrupt needs to be established to oversee re-construction of the territories with the use of Gulf money, and investment and industry must be established there in partnership with Israeli companies. The Palestinians are a source of cheap labor, and there is so much good that the Israelis and Palestinians could do together if they could coexist. The current corrupt Palestinian administration is doomed, but there is no other clear alternative at this time. The Sharon administration is doomed also, as the Israeli people will soon start doing the pre-Sharon and post-Sharon casualty math and figure they were better off without him. You very rarely see war in countries that are economically strong. People without jobs and without hope have lots of time to take out their frustrations. This is really simplistic, but I just wanted to point out that I do know some details from a few people who experienced what you say did not happen. They have all moved on in their lives, and just want to see everyone live in peace in that area.
