The bacterium that causes syphilis is also closely related to the one that causes Lyme disease, interestingly enough. I'm reading an interesting book about the spirochete that causes Lyme disease right now:

Honest. It actually is interesting.
Probably not for the squeamish, though. Ticks play a prominent role in the book. (Deer ticks, of course, are the ones that spread the disease to humans.)
