I had a failed install of an IBM "Hidsomething" driver several times and finally quit getting the update notice. You might try going back to Windows Update and reviewing installs so we can know exactly what device driver we are trying to find out about. Here's a link to google discussion groups. The third or fouth one down has something very similar to what you are talking about. He lost his cdrom and cdrw.

There is an uninstall button for the Intel Storage driver you just installed. I found it at the bottom of the installation history page. Click on show installed updates on the select software page in Windows update.

B.K., same problem here: after installing the Intel driver suggested by Windows update, my CD drive is not being recognized. It just doesn't show at all.
