Sure, but my take is that these reasons would be insufficient without American widespread sympathy. The sympathy exists because of a) religious interest in the Holy Land (not necessary the same as interest in the Israelis) and b) shared democratic values.

There are also military interests. If I were looking for military allies, I'd be much more interested in the Israeli Air Force than the Saudi Air Force, for all the equipment the Saudis have bought from us.

I read recently that most of the Saudi pilots are Pakistani mercenaries. Even for this, they hire out? Amazing.

My own illustrations for Win's argument are Chile in the 70s and Iran in the 50s. But the list is rather long
