SAN JOSE -- In a rare positive sign for the semiconductor materials business, worldwide silicon wafer shipments showed some sequential growth after declining steadily in the current IC downturn, said a new report from the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) trade group here.

Blank silicon wafer shipments totaled 878 million square inches in the fourth quarter of 2001, down 39% from 1.45 billion square inches in Q4 of 2000, but the volume was up 7% from 824 million square inches in the Q3 of last year, according to SEMI, which released its yearend report on late Monday.
