Identical? No. Much less of a difference than the .18 PIII vs. .18 PIII-M? That was the justification I saw quoted in one of the stories.

So what gives AMD the right to charge more for the Athlon MP over the Athlon XP?

Their less leaky process lets a variable clock save more power.

Well, the MP have been tested to verify 2P operation and the price premium is a flat $50 over the corresponding XP chip. Most but not all XP will also work. With the MP you also get an unlocked processor and the ceramic rather than organic packaging.
