Schwartz and Murphey have correctly depicted the Saudi predicament to some extent. However, they paint with the broad brush of bigotry which costs them some credibility. That is too bad because they make some very good points.

Within the Muslim world we can see the effects of extremism and compulsion about our religion by some individuals and radical groups. This is not much different than what has gone on throughout the history of America with religious, ethnic, political, racial, etc. extremists. However when one attempts to implicate all persons who have even incidental associations it produces the pot and the kettle effect; especially when there is an obvious bias and a preconceived bone being picked over. The implied solution is, "destroy em all." This is not a rational perspective and only adds to the confusion and dilema we are living in at such paradoxical times. Unfortunately that puts them into the category of "part of the problem."

As a world we have evolved to a point where we should be able to view friends and foe according to sets of principles that we commonly ascribe to and the behavior that rises out of that. Clearly National boundaries speak for them selves. I hope we are past the age of declaring war on all who inhabit a particular region of dirt. For example, we can identify the Al-Quaida agenda as adversarial and dangerous. The country of Afghanistan and the various groups and sets of circumstances within its borders, however, are an entirely different matter.

Our target is clear and our mission directed, as long as we stay focused on the terrorist network and not on political borders. Had Bush simply gone to war with Afghanistan we could now be declaring victory while our enemies "The Al-Quaida" would be strengthened in various parts of the world. Our activities would be viewed as Western Empirialism and oppression by Eastern countries. It is not at this point and our enemies have no firm ground to stand on when calling for support from Eastern Nations. They are being shunned and/or routed out as the traitors and corrupt terrorists that they are.

Some lilac buds caught my eye this afternoon while taking a strole. I am looking forward to the Spring, particularly the fragrance and beauty of those lilacs.

Have Peace
