this is interesting because iridium went bankrupt...but the sat phones are an absolute necessity for some of our units so DOD made a deal with the buyers in late 1970 that has kept the system going.

clearly from this news the system is working well for DOD and others.

Journal 'confident' Pearl is still alive

The Wall Street Journal says it's confident Daniel Pearl is still alive.

It comes despite an admission in court by the chief suspect in his kidnapping, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheik, that he is dead.

Steven Goldstein, spokesman for Dow Jones & Co, The Wall Street Journal's parent organisation, said he had not heard about Saeed's statement.

"We continue to remain hopeful," he said. "We remain confident that Danny is still alive."

Goldstein said no representatives from the Wall Street Journal were present at the court proceedings. Daniel Pearl's wife, Mariane, who is pregnant with the couple's first child, also did not attend.

Pakistani officials say they will reserve judgment until a body was found.

Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider cast doubt on Saeed's statement.

"Until the body is found we cannot believe what Omar (Saeed) is saying. We need proof or evidence. We will continue to work on him, grind him, ask him 'where was Pearl kept? Where is his body?' Omar himself admitted he masterminded and planned this crime."

Mr Pearl disappeared in Karachi on January 23 while investigating a story on Islamic militants.

Saeed has been formally charged with kidnapping and ordered to be jailed for two more weeks.
