Did you hear about the DC civil servant who was fired for using the word "niggardly"? It was all explained, and it didn't matter, because there are too many demagogues out there ready to make something out of nothing, and too many dolts willing to believe them.

To take an historical example, I have had recurring arguments with Southern nostalgics who assert that the principal cause of secession was not slavery. Early on, I located a speech that Jefferson Davis gave to his Senatorial colleagues at his departure, where he expressly says that the main cause of secession was slavery, along with some lesser corroboration. Each time I post it, it is blown off.

Besides, the purpose of privilege is to encourage candor, and hence improve deliberation. If someone does not care to jump through hoops to defend himself if things are twisted against him, he will not offer sincere opinion.......
