"So basically no matter what GWB says or does, you can safely come to the same conclusion."

Hey, I feel for you. My Czech ancestors have battled with my German ones over this one...

Good point. But when you have caught him in so many lies, you begin to wonder why. Ok, take this one in particular. At the time that Dubya was trying to pick a site for his father's library, Lay wasy lobbying very heavily for the University of Houston. Lay himself claims to have gotten to know Dubya very well during this period, and if you know anything about the universities in Texas, you have to believe him. There is a very short list of major universities outside of Texas A&M (who wound up with it) and the University of Texas. I doubt very seriously that Lay only met with him once during this period, and there couldn't have been that many that met with him. So why claim that he didn't get to know him until he became governor? Note: this is only one opportunity that Dubya had to get to know Lay before he was governor. Chances approach unity that there were several others before he became governor. I only find this suspicious because of his claim that he only got to know "Kenny Boy" after Anne was overnor, despite the near certaintly that he knew him before. Now even if you meet a large number of people in your day to day life, you generally tend to remember someone you have met on multiple occasions, even if they don't represent laarge sums of money and influence. Either that, or you gain a reputation of being particularly dense or oblivous.

Ok, I ask you, why did Dubya cliam that he never met, or got to know, Lay in the period before he was governor? Even though there aren't particularly good records, and even if there were, there are likely sealed, why lie about it? What harm would there have been in admitting that he got to know Lay well before he was governor? Unless, like so much of Dubya's life, he has this need to lie or inflate what actually happened?

And no, I don't necessarily think there is something sinister, but with his pattern of lying or covering up of almost everything, what choice do I have?

GWB said that "he only got to know Lay after he became the Guv of Texas"
- you say he lied, because he had "many opportunities ... to meet him, and work closely with him, before he was governor." Basically this is your assumption.

Joe, I can understand how combjelly could make such assumption assuming that it was an assumption on his part. If Bush didn't know Lay before he was guv, then Bush is either a very quick read which doesn't sound right, or he was influenced by someone very close to him to greet Lay and ENE with open arms. I say that because he placed two recommended individuals from ENE on public commissions.......I think public utilities. Presumably, you grant such favors only to people close to you and your administration. Furthermore ENE and Lay were serious contributors to Bush's gubnatorial race.....would they have not known each other at least then?

BTW, isn't that like assigning the fox to guard the chicken coop? Oh, well, what do I know about TX politics.
