I really don't know. Some other animals, like otters, eat them by cracking the shells against rocks. I suppose that gave people the idea that there was something there to eat. I don't know why they are often eaten raw, when most meat is cooked. Before the discovery of fire, I suppose that everyone made due. After the discovery of fire, I would suppose that someone discovered that meat, say boar, tasted better roasted, and it caught on. But, funnily enough, oysters and clams generally taste better, or at least as good, raw. So whereas people developed the habit of cooking most meat and fish, they made an exception in the case of oysters and clams. It is kind of like deciding to cook potatoes, but not apples........
