Absolutely, you see how much debt Newmont has and how much interest they are paying ? I made point earlier this week they ought to use the FN cash to pay down debt instead of close Normandy hedges, which would make their capital structure better.

True, this is why Newmont's reserves went from 66.3moz to 59.6oz.
Compare Goldstrike to Carlin, each lost about 4moz in reserves last year.

Pascua Lama is "negligible" at $275 according to Barrick, but Veladero is a bit different. It is more amenable to a smaller startup operation at even current gold prices, and any build up of infrastruture in the region will eventually benefit both properties.

Anyway, things will get more interesting. Newmont will soon be holding royalties on Goldstike and will be 50/50 partners at Superpit. These guys have been know to swap assets in the past, but not play well together. I think there will be more asset swaps. Also, Newmont now own 50% of Echo Bay, wonder what they will do with it ??

I also wonder what this news really means: biz.yahoo.com
