re: Printers...

Have you checked Consumer Reports? They tested printers in Sept 01 and in Feb 01. You may consider the mag too liberal however... :-) They rated HP's and Canon very highly...two of the Epson's produce hi quality photo's but not hi quality text....very cheap, 100-300 $$

My local computer store has the models on display and hooked up so that you can test each for the quality you wish.

Also, the paper used is extremely important. A photo quality glossy paper on my Epson 600C with a setting of 1440 dpi / glossy paper gets near photo quality printing. If you want that kind of quality use Epson ink as well. I haven't found a good generic for the ink yet.

So, maybe the reason your 2500 (I'm not familiar with the model) doesn't print photo quality is because of the paper itself. Your fathers canon is probably a bubble jet and that requires different paper than normal. So, he already has the correct paper for quality printing.

What kind of paper and ink do you use?

Will the printer print 1440 dpi?

Maybe you are spending too much for a printer. My Epson was only a couple hundred and my friend picked one up which was comparable to my old one for about the same price but I believe was a 900C or 990C, not sure which one it is now.

BTW - do you have to print photo quality 11x17 prints? Mine will not print 11x17 but I can use another printer for that. If your current printer allows for 11x17, then you could pick up a 900C @ $120.00 for the photo quality printing.
