<Having Wehrmacht troops drawn from the Eastern Front in anticipation of the Allied Invasion was important, but we don't know how critical it was. >

It's my understanding that there would have never been an invasion of France [US] if Russia had folded.

"the Russians won WWII with help from other nations"

Yep they sure did. They got a lot of help from the US before Russia declared war on a defeated Japan in 1945.

Russian schools need to check their history. It was 06/06/1944.

You say you learned this in Russian schools. I learned my history in US schools as well as an in-depth personal study of WWII. Last I checked, in 197x, Russia was still behind the iron curtain...I am not surprised you were taught that "the Allies wanted to have both Germany and Russia well exhausted before they got involved" Sorry, that dog will not hunt.

The US was staunchly isolationist when operation Barbarossa began in the summer of 1941. It took the Dec 7,1941 attack on Pearl Harbor to bring the US in the war. Check your history. It took a great deal of diplomacy from Churchill and his staff to persuade Roosevelt and General Marshall to pursue a Europe First Policy. And even then, the US wanted and invasion of Western Europe rather the campaign through Sicily and Italy.

You must remember that your Russian school in 197x, still thought the U.S. a enemy. The commissar was told to tell you that the U.S. wanted an exhausted Germany and Russia.

It took the U.S., British, Canadians, French, Polish etc... from 6/44 to 5/45 to drive through from the English Channel to Germany. The speed of this advance was in fact paid for with the blood of millions of Red Army soldiers. This fact cannot be minimized. But the statement that Russia won WWII with the help of other nations is not altogether true. It was a combined effort and all the nations paid in blood. Russia paid a heavy price, but the blood of other nations should not be diminished.
