Another excellent book is "The German Army 1933 - 1945" authored by Matthew Cooper.

I'm not an expert by any means,I think most Americans know about Stalingrad though. Truly a crushing defeat for the Germans. How many surrendered? If memory serves it was several hundred thousand.

The Campaigns after Stalingrad I don't know much about.
I have watched millions of hours of the History channnel on the subject though. Including wholesale executions of Russian citizens by the Nazis. They seemed to have a special hatred for the Russians. I believe this came from the top down.
