our nukes should only be used in response to a nuclear attack by someone else
they are the ultimate deterrent, and should remain that- and if we use them, we should contemplate that it may mean the end of civilization, or even humanity (if it were me I would never use them- but I wouldn't tell anyone else that- if I were in power. I'd be bluffing instead.)

I am not sure the threat of anything is worth possibly ending human existence. But then I don't believe in absolute evil. I believe in awfulness, and horribleness, but like goodness, and kindness, these things tend to pass. Sometimes in decades, sometimes in centuries. Nukes seem like suicide to me- and there aren't a lot of reasons (imo) to consider suicide. But of course people will differ on that. And most of the people who have their fingers on the triggers may think there are "good" reasons to strategically use nukes. I never have thought that and I never will. Ultimate destruction is not something I could ever stand behind as a concept.
