Mine's a backhoe. His is a skidsteer loader. Much smaller machine.

I've avoided getting one because it fills such a small gap between the backhoe and the tractor with a boxblade on it, but since the one I'm borrowing has tracks and a toothed bucket, I'm finding it to be handier than I thought it would be.

Where our dirt race track is, I'm stripping it down to clay to make for a better, more stable track, and moving the topsoil to one of the ponds to make the slopes the way I want them.

Using the backhoe, it takes quite a while to strip the soil. Most of it's so compacted that the straight cutting edge on the front bucket can't budge it. I've had to turn the machine around and dig up the soil with the backhoe, then scoop it up to take it to the dumptruck.

I've greatly reduced the work cycle by using his machine to scape off the topsoil and put it in a pile, then use the backhoe to just move it to the dumptruck.

Need to get my friend out here running the skidsteer and dump truck for a day. Need one person running the backhoe and one to run the skidder and dumptruck. I know my son would probably pay me to let him, but I don't trust him working the backhoe that close to the truck or the skidder (I've already banged up the truck a bit more myself), and definitely can't have him running the skidder or the truck.

Last night I finally got the banks of the pond in good enough shape that I can drive around the whole thing with the backhoe. Quite a breakthrough. Took forever to move enough dirt to accomplish that one.

The big project this year (in addition to the room addition) will be once more draining the lake, and getting all the topsoil out of it now that we've got a truck that can haul it back up the hill several yards at a time.
