Britain was actually a very benign world power [despite propaganda to the contrary]. Given the era Great Britain was great, their treatment of aliens was actually extremely good. At that time, humans were very much red in tooth and claw. Britain did not simply go marauding everywhere. They took their habeas corpus, human rights, law, Christian concepts of equality and stuff like that with them. I think Britain was as good as the USA is now. Actually, in some respects better. Life under Britain actually allowed more freedom with less conformity. The British have traditionally valued eccentricity and individualism, whereas the USA is mnore conformist [by comparison]. Yes, there are more egregious examples of human condition in the USA [Tim McVeigh as a terrorist did a better job than Gerry Adams for example and for all its horror, Omagh was less deathful than Waco, which was a police action to protect children, who unfortunately died]. But overall, the USA is a very compliant, conformist and stultifying place. "Safety you know!" is the catchcry to stop any fun anywhere. But, that's being picky and yes, you are right that the USA rates higher than any other country in many ways. That's why I support it. However, I far prefer to live in New Zealand! Life in Canada was nice too [but too cold] and I'd prefer Canada to the USA. Hmm, Belgium was nicer than the USA too, [apart from the bleak climate and the heavy pall of cigarette smoke and a few other glitches]. It all depends on each individual's values, interests, economic wishes etc... I think the individual people in the USA are more generous per capita than elsewhere. But in terms of foreign aid by the government, I think it's way down the list. Anyway, mine's bigger than your's is a bit tiresome. My point is to suggest ways to make life better everywhere. Mqurice
