If a candidate ran on a ticket that promised strong support of evironmental controls, and then reneged on that
promise once in office.........how long do you think it would take to get him out of office?

Can you make the question more specific?

No, I think you get the point.

"I don't disagree but I think most people would prefer that the representative accurately represents the majority view of his/her district right from the get go.

If he or she does not adiquately represent the opinions of the district then he or she will be probably not win the election. If someone lies about all of their opinions and goes against everything they campaigned for once they get in to office then I would agree that they where in the wrong but the only way to deal with that is not to elect them again.

I don't know why we are arguing this point but I thought you said something like the rep. should vote his/her conscious and not be a slave to the polls. The rep can behave in that fashion; unfortunately the rep. has a responsibility to his/her constituents. If the rep runs on a pro union ticket and wins and then votes anti union throughout his/her term because his/her conscious dictates, the rep is not likely to be reelected.

The point......the rep can not be independent of his/her constituency.......if he/she doesn't vote the way his/her constituency expects, the rep loses his/her job.......the relationship is intentionally symbiotic.........it allows the individual to be free of voting on every issue but insures that his/her rep will view and vote the issue the way he/she likes.
