It is not a big issue around here, so I do not perceive it as being a problem. If I am mistaken, I will consider the oversight.....

I'm not in the best of positions to speak to the priorities of liberals, but I don't think that Heather and fur coats are a priority with them, either. Spotted owls, maybe, but not Heather and fur coats. Or even political correctness. And certainly not reparations.

I think we all tend to overstate the foibles of those in the dark nether regions, far from our home base. I don't think these crappy little issues are very important to either side. Partisans just hang on to them because they don't want to be divisive or because they stubbornly don't want to concede anything to the enemy. I have virtually no contact with social conservatives so I may well magnify the strength of their crappy little issues. I have more contact with liberals, and I think that's what you are doing with theirs. I mean, how long ago was Skokie, for heaven's sake?

I really think the best approach is telling both emperors that they have no clothes. There are plenty of real issues and real differences between the sides on those issues, such as poverty and crime, to tie the nation's infrastructure in knots over crap.

Change of subject.

Did you see Farrakhan speak recently? I caught the last fifteen minutes or so last night on C-SPAN. I'm not entirely sure I wasn't dreaming. He was talking about the brotherhood of Muslims, Christians, and Jews, about American Muslims leading their foreign co-religionists in moderating Islam, about non-violence... The guy was the picture of moderation. He disagreed with Bush and the war, but he did so very respectfully. The only kooky thing I heard him say was that he expected to be arrested. It wasn't clear for what.

The program is supposed to be replayed this afternoon, if you're interested. I'm going to try to catch it.

EDIT: Here it is on CSPAN1.
