Now, I invite you, but not anybody else since you're the only one who seems to care about the substantive issues here, to tell me why that isn't a perfectly reasonable position to take?

Because its not working.....

And if you agree to the "deal" I floated and others then breach the peace the shame is on them, not on you. You and Poet are each restricted from bugging each other, directly or indirectly. E agreed to throw herself into the mix. Hell, if you want, I won't post to or about you anymore either.....just so long as this particular issue can go away forever......

My understanding was that you wanted the issue dropped.

"The snipers will never be satisfied." The deal that JLA proposed includes an end to comments to or about you on this issue. Of course there is no guarantee that a new tac could not be found by the "snipers". I too am leary in this regard. I would be more surprised if they left you alone than if anything else happened.

The deal involves only you and Poet, (and E's advocacy on the issue). Other people can continue to needle you, and these people may seek and find new cause.

However, I am not going to cut down every tree in my neighborhood on the possibility that one of them could harbor a sniper in the future....you?

Why is it in my best interests to make any "deal" at all?

Earlier I suggested that there was no way to evade this gracefully. Perhaps I was too subtle, so I will rephrase. Because there is no way to not accept this reasonable deal without appearing for all to see to be a horse's ass. That's why.
