One problem IMO is that the phrase has a distinct Batman flavour to it. It conveys unprofessionalism and invites all kinds of indignation for a serious situation.

Axis of evil means co-ordination. There's no way around it. So - is there co-ordination between Iran, Iraq and North Korea vis-a-vis evil? No, IMO, they are each evil all alone.

That's why it was a stupid thing to say. And I am a Bush supporter. It's just that sometimes he makes me wince.

one thing that's worth noting about all this, in light of the discussions we've had here about intelligence failures, the possibilities of successful deterrence, and so forth...

the two people whose views I mentioned are both experienced professionals with recent government service in important positions and extensive contacts with people still in the system. If they disagree on how to interpret what our own government is doing, just imagine how difficult it is to predict the future, accurately gauge what others are up to, etc....
