I think the way to analyze the question is whether the US is intervening in Colombia to help US interests or whether Colombia is asking us to help their interests. It's more the latter than the former. Colombia has been trying to draw the US into assisting them fight the guerrillas for a long time.

The US isn't going to get involved in military action unless a US interest is at stake.

I'd like to see the political situation in Colombia settled, and the guerrillas destroyed, myself. I think peace in the region is ipso facto in our long run interest. We have a lot more at stake here than Bosnia or Kosovo, IMO.

We haven't had a US president take much of an interest in Latin America in quite a while.
