what are the QCOM chipsets that can fit into this GSM1X scheme? How about MSM6300 cdmatech.com and MSM6500? cdmatech.com I think it makes much more sense to use 6xxx series for GSM1x because that it is unrealistic to have 1x only phone on top of GSM-MAP. So multimode is the way to go. Also with ZIF the cost and size of the multimode phone will be reduced greatly therefore make them affordable. are all the handsets then equipped with a UIM or SIM card? If you want to use them in the GSM world then you have to have the R-UIM card. R-UIM card is not hard to do. Even MSM5105 can do it so that's not a big deal. how soon do you think a commercial launch can technically be accomplished This is really a tough question to answer because that is really depending on a lot of factors. Just technical speaking I think maybe the most tricky part will be the intersystem handoff between the 1x and GSM and their impact over the performance of the whole system. Also the high level applications might need some works too. But based on this PR cdmatech.com Q said the sample shipment is expected to be first half of CY2002. I would say it is not unrealistc to see mature product by the end of this year. if a current GSM carrier adopts GSM1X path, what will be the next move? GSM 1X - 1X EV DO?? That should be the very logical move next. In my very China centric opinion, EV-DO should fit in China perfectly. As you and I both know that China also charge minutes on wireline phone calls, so for those in China who are using wireline for internet access, HDR should be a very appealing alternate. So my wildest dream is to see HDR become a booming market in China as the next big thing. Hope Q can play it right.
