Milo, speaking of the top 500 supercomputers, here's an interesting observation.

34 IBM Titan Cluster Itanium 800 MHz 677.90 NCSA USA 2001 320

IBM has a 320 processor, Merced based Itanium cluster at 34th place. That in and of itself is interesting, but look at how it compares with other systems:

31 Compaq AlphaServer SC ES45/1 GHz 706.00 Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing Australia 2001 480

A 480 processor 1GHz AlphaServer,

44 IBM SP Power3 375 MHz Wright-Patterson Air Force Base/DoD ASC USA 2000 528

A 528 processor Power3 system,

41 IBM Netfinity Cluster PIII 1 GHz 594.00 NCSA USA 2001 1024

A 1024 processor 1GHz Pentium III system,

86 Self-made Presto III Athlon 1.2 GHz 331.70 GSIC Center,Tokyo Institute of Technology Japan 2001 256

And a 256 processor Athlon 1.2GHz system.

Dividing the performance per processor of each of these systems, we have:

Merced 800MHz = 677.90 / 320 = 2.12
Alpha 1.0GHz = 706.00 / 480 = 1.47
Power3 375MHz = 553.00 / 528 = 1.05
Pentium3 1GHz = 594.0 / 1024 = 0.58
Athlon 1.2GHz = 331.70 / 256 = 1.29

No wonder Itanium is generating quite a lot of interest... it outperforms all the others on a per processor basis. It outperforms the Alpha and the Athlon by 44% and 64%, respectively. This says a lot for the floating point prowess of the chip, and it's application in supercomputing workloads. I am now quite eager to see how McKinley might perform in this market segment....

P.S. sorry about all the fonts. It was hard to make certain lines distinguishable, while still keeping data aligned.

milo - You wrote Actually there's more than 3. Point was AMD had ZERO prior to Athlon

So, milo, can we assume that AMD had 4 out of, say, 4,000,000 servers last year?

Yes, that is greater that zero - in fact it is 0.0001 Per Cent.

So - let me be the first to congratulate you on AMD fine showing of a 0.0001 per cent market share - after nearly a year in the market.
You're very welcome, milo, - for the math.
