ORLANDO, Fla., Feb 24, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- LightSurf Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of technology, solutions and applications for Instant Imaging and mobile multimedia, announced today they have joined the I3A and OSTA sponsored initiative to develop and promote MultiPhoto/Video (MPV), a new open specification that will provide consumers with improved ease-of-use and advanced interaction of digital media collections with a variety of applications across a broad range of storage media types. The Optical Storage Technology Association (www.osta.org) and the International Imaging Industry Association (www.i3a.org) have collaborated to create MPV, enabling computer software and consumer electronics devices to more easily process and playback collections of digital photos and videos captured with digital cameras.

As an active member in I3A, LightSurf has greatly contributed technical and marketing knowledge to further speed the development of worldwide imaging standards. LightSurf's involvement in and support of MPV will ensure interoperability and seamless exchange of instant photo messages and associated metadata between all standard media platforms and applications.

Today, consumers generally transfer digital images to hard disks, record them onto CDs or DVDs, store them on some other media, or transfer them via memory card. While there are many software applications that can be used to organize and display digital photos in album form, there is currently no fast or easy way to organize, store and playback the content exactly as captured without additional steps. In addition, there is no standard representation of photo or video collections when stored as data files on CD or DVD, which today are among the best media for long-term storage of consumer digital content.

The MPV initiative will solve these problems for the consumer electronics industry by providing a set of data formats and practices to represent albums and collections of digital photo/video content captured using consumer digital cameras and other sources of digital images. MPV will essentially define the table of contents of a collection and provide extensible means to store and access metadata about the content. The use of identifiers with existing photo, video, and audio file formats will enable collections to withstand reorganizing, renaming and even editing of the content.

"The development and adoption of new imaging industry standards is extremely important to us as LightSurf's globally deployed Instant Imaging solutions are built entirely on open standards. This is key to ensure seamless operation and integration," said Philippe Kahn, CEO LightSurf. "The MPV standard will greatly simplify interoperability among all digital imaging products and will be a very useful and important element in the future of mobile multimedia applications like instant photo messaging."

"LightSurf brings invaluable expertise to the MPV initiative group and we are very pleased that they are helping to drive this key new I3A project," said Lisa Walker, Co-Executive Director and Chief Marketing Officer, I3A. "LightSurf is a leading player in the global marketplace. Their support illustrates the universal demand that the MPV standard will deliver on and this is tremendous news for both business and consumers."

Information about I3A can be found on the World Wide Web at www.i3a.org.

The Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA) was incorporated as an international trade association in 1992 to promote the use of recordable optical technologies and products. The organization's membership includes optical product manufacturers and resellers from three continents, representing more than 85 percent of worldwide writable optical product shipments. They work to shape the future of the industry through regular meetings of CD/DVD, file interchange, market development, high performance optical, including MO, and planning committees. Interested companies worldwide are invited to join the organization and participate in its programs by contacting an OSTA representative at +1 805/963-3853, by fax +1 805/962-1541 or by addressing its Web site at www.osta.org.

MOT and NEC were the only handset mfrs at Cannes with working WCDMA handsets--along with Qcom having handsets. What does this mean for Qcom? I think MOT will be using Qcom chips. MOT has a lead and won't want to blow it. Furthermore, MOT imho learned from its past mistakes in trying to make its own chips and will rely on Qcom for chips.

Ericy using qcom chipsets for WCDMA is perhaps the most positive news for qcom in a long time.

both were running over commercial W-CDMA networks.

I've apparently missed something (and I don't mean that facetiously.) Where are the commercial W-CDMA networks up and running?
