the same approach we tried before

The problem we have is how to "rebuild" something that was never "built" in the first place.

SirRealist... The operative word in my post was "not our SOLE responsibility"... It's the responsibility of the rest of the world as well, especially when we spent the majority of the money ridding the world of such a despotic regime as the Taliban.

But furthermore, the US cannot be seen as the lead nation in rebuilding Afghanistan, as it's internal government will be perceived as a puppet regime of the US.

Better to have the Spaniards, Jordanians, and other UN members take the lead in the rebuilding effort.

After all, the US, as the primary financial supporter of the UN, is footing the majority of the bill anyway.
