It wasn't necessarily a typo -- it is, indeed, used both ways.

I don't see why we should kowtow to what second century Christians, none of whom knew Christ personally, tried to define Christianity as. There were a lot of different interpretations of Christianity around back then. The Creed was intended as much -- or more -- a political document than a theological document. Its adherents won out, and therefore have written history to exclude any ideas not approved by them.

As is well known, the winners write history, but not always accurately.
