Hi Mephisto,

If I still lived in California, I'd consider joining the Republican Party just so I could vote for Simon or Jones in the primary and spare the state a Riordan governorship. Not that Riordan isn't my first choice for the governor's position, and he is. But because denying the Republicans any elective gain in November is so crucial to the survival of the American system of (more or less) honest governance.

Riordan is a hero of mine for coming out and telling the rapacious IPEA, the power marketers, that he'd roll back the onerous contracts in place with DPW, the State's purchasing agent for electrical power. He lost a lot of support with IPEA members by being honest and forthright.

Riordan is the kind of Republican I can't figure out. He's honest. Why he keeps such lousy company is beyond me.
