AMD Demonstrates Next-Generation Processor

Kudos to AMD. I didn't think they would do it so soon.

Max, Re: "AMD's demonstration featured ``Hammer'' running both a 64-bit Linux and 32-bit Microsoft® Windows® operating system. The AMD ``Hammer'' processors were manufactured on 0.13 micron, Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology, which together enable higher performance and lower power consumption."

A most significant milestone for Hammer, to be sure!

Great ... so .13, SOI and chipset demonstrated as well as Hammer.

"AMD expects to begin shipping the first version of the ``Hammer'' family of processors at the end of 2002."

This year will be long tho

Max, Re: AMD Demonstrates Next-Generation Processor

Wow, great news! The samples must be working pretty well if they can already run Windows and Linux (I wonder if a Kernel compile is possible <g>). Too bad that AMD didn't give any information about the clock-speed... But it's good to know that both the Hammer design and the 0.13 micron SOI process are healthy.

First Hammer engineering samples out already 10 months ago?

See this post by doriangrey at Ace's: aceshardware.com

" (...) A) the Hammer is not a modified K7 core (modified EV7 core perhaps K7 core no) and B)The first Hammer engineering samples showed up 10 months ago, having seen the benchmarks for the Hammer, (no I am not at liberty to discuss them) I guaranty you Intel has reason to be worried."

If that is true, there might be a chance of seeing Hammer earlier in Q4 than most people think. Remember that Mike Magee recently wrote that you will be able to buy the Hammer "before December".
