John, Re: "Then you've got Intel producing $308K revenue per employee v. AMD's $264K. More efficient."

That's an interesting statistic - never seen that one before. Of course, it's even more impressive, once you take out of the equation your Personal Pet Peeve - the revenue and employees from Intel's "other" divisions.

Though, hopefully, you won't have to wait too much longer before those business groups end up making significant profits.

re: to handle (a presumed) expanding market

it is all in timing. Would it make any sense to build fabs in 70s for use in 90s? It is a streatch to say that that would save time and money.....

Overcapacity is not good for intel and for the industry.....

re: And Intel is running around 50% gross margins, while AMD seems to have close to negative gross margins.

amd's gm cpus is between 30 and 40 if I recall it correctly. In the environment that we are in right now lower margin is an advantage. (and don't tell me that if that would be true then intel would simply lower the prices, you know better than that ).

re: you have to figure Intel knows how to manage it's costs a little better than AMD.

maybe if you look it over long period of time but over the last 2-3 years amd managed to create a lot of problem for intel on much smaller budget. I'd say they have better cost control than intel.

re: Then you've got Intel producing $308K revenue per employee v. AMD's $264K. More efficient

By what definition? Is it batter to have a single $100 bill or 20 $20 bills. Plus efficiency as you probably defined it is not really due to better output but rather higher asps.

re: But the market is a moving target,

we have currently 140 mil chips per year with most of the world not been able to afford the same number of computers per person as in US. Draw your own conclusions here.....

re: Like skeet shooting.

not familiar with that one but I am familiar with ak47 very well. And I could not believe the stupidity of those who used the gun as a hunting rifle even in it's semi form. Yes it is stable and easy to shoot and yes it can kill a deer when it's moving from about 1500 feet away and then kill few rangers and fellow hunters as well.
