They already said their productivity per employee was way beneath the corporate goal. Cut the dead weight to get there. In a depression type environment like the telecomms are going thru, it's prudent to lighten up. If they need to hire in a year or two, they can always find new meat, or those former employees tired of flipping burgers or bagging groceries.
