I'm not sure there is anything in the records and if there isn't and that comes out, think how foolish the pinheads will look. It will I think act to strengthen executive privilege which was severely eroded by the many specious privileges Clinton claimed to cover his sorry lying ass....

I think Cheney picked the fight
Why? So he can get served with a subpoena and try to claim an executive privilege he very likely doesn't have?

It wasn't some grand plan from the beginning to get a subpoena. He had the meetings. He thought and still thinks that there is no legal requirement to provide the information requested. He probably views defending the fact that there is no need to hand over the info as part of defending the prerogatives of the executive branch and also worries that in the future people would be less likely to provide input if they have to go on the record. He is a bit ornery at times about some things, so he doesn't back down even if it would be good politics.
